The town of Jerome's origins was as a copper mining camp. However, today Jerome allows visitors to step back in time more than a 100 years. Many of the town's original structures are still standing.

A downtown view of Jerome. Many of the original structures have been converted into charming shops and restaurants. During its heyday, Jerome's population swelled to an estimated 15,000 people.

Time and gravity have taken their toll on this home on the hillside in Jerome. However, you can't beat the view.

One of Jerome's most interesting buildings is its sliding jail which slid across a street and down the hillside. The sliding was attributed to underground blasting.

The Verde Canyon Railroad leaves from Clarkdale and travels through approximately 40 miles of scenic riparian wilderness. The railroad is located west of Sedona and below Jerome.

The Verde River as it flows through the canyon. The river is a habitat for endangered waterfowl and wildlife. The river heads at Sullivan Lake in Big Chino Valley and flows south for 170 miles.

The ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad takes a little more than four hours to complete. This is the perfect pace to view all of the beauty of the canyon and the river.

The Verde Canyon is only accessible by rail. The train runs from the depot located at Clarkdale to Perkinsville.

The Verde Canyon Railroad (previously known as the Verde Valley Railroad) was first used in conjunction with the copper mine located at Jerome.

The approximately 38 miles of the railroad were constructed from 1911 to 1912.
